Hope you are very well! I have been so busy with styling lovely clients, personal shopping trips, photographing at events and writing this article which is also published in this US online magazine http://www.
So now I’m back with more styling tips for you!! What is your absolute favourite piece of clothing? I recently bought the blue jacket that you can see me wearing. I love it and wear it all the time. We all have our favourite items.
But why is it that we as women can have wardrobes stuffed with clothes and outfits, yet feel we never have anything to wear?!
Would you believe, on average, most women only make use of only 20-30% of their wardrobe. As a personal stylist I’ve looked into many wardrobes and I can confirm that I have found this to be the case almost every time! And here lies the answer to the question: ‘Why do I have so many clothes, yet still have nothing to wear?!’
Basically it tells us that a lot of shopping mistakes have been made. If women only use 20-30% of their wardrobe, that means a staggering 70% of their clothes hang in their wardrobes, not doing much of anything. Go to your wardrobe and do a quick appraisal. How much of your clothing gives you that extra spring in your step and smile on your face?
On average most women make 4-6 mistake buys per season. That means a lot of their hard earned money is wasted on items that they will probably not wear, and over the course of a year, that soon adds up!
Top Tips For Great Shopping Habits
1) Focus on your hot points
Use the art of clever dressing by cleverly placing colour or details where you want people to focus – your best features! Disguise your less desirable points with muted, dark colours or tailored fits.
2) Establish your Style Core
There are six basic style cores: feminine (romantic), classic, rock-chick (cool), bohemian(hippie), relaxed (casual/sporty) and simple (minimalistic). There are no right or wrong styles. You will be attracted to a particular type of style more than the others and that’s absolutely fine. You can even be a mix of style cores, but you will always lean toward one more than the other. When you have established what your style core is, you will be more focused when shopping and will avoid those sometimes expensive shopping mistakes. 3) Find your Body Shape
This is key in helping you to find clothes that give you the most flattering look for your body and provide the best silhouette. When clothes fit you just right, you will move with more confidence and elegance.
4) Choose the Right Colours
This point should not be under estimated. The right colours can make you look healthier and younger. You may find that warm colours suit you better than cold tones or vice versa, depending on what your skin tone, hair and eye colours are. It can also help to send signals about you, such as optimism, confidence, assertiveness, power etc.
5) Get a Wardrobe Detox
Go through your wardrobe and take out the clutter – that is, any items that you haven’t worn in the last 5 months. You will most likely find that these items don’t suit your shape, colour or style.
6) Fill in the Gaps in your Wardrobe
After your wardrobe detox, you should easily be able to see what is missing and make a shopping list. A few well picked items will bring your wardrobe together and make it easier to get dressed and look stylish in a flash, leaving more time for the important things in life.
6) The ‘3-4 Match’ Rule
Before you swipe your beloved credit card through the machine, ask yourself ‘can I match this to 3-4 other things in my wardrobe?’. If you can’t say yes, you will have a hard time making use of it, because now you have to buy other things that can go with this new item.
7) Returns policy
Buy from places where you can get your money back or at least get a store credit to use on something else. That way, if you have not worn the item within 2-3 weeks, then you can return it, which brings us to the next point…
8) The ‘I Have to Wear it Now!’ Rule
In my experience, if you are not dying to wear it right then and there, you might not have picked the right thing. You should only buy things you love and that you are excited about.
9) Organise, Organise, Organise
Now that you have a stylish wardrobe, filled with items that make you look fantastic, arrange it in such a way that it takes no time at all to choose an outfit.
10) Happy Sunday outfit mixer
A good start to a busy week is to just use 30 minutes or so on Sunday (or whichever day is before your starting work day of the week) to put 5 gorgeous outfits together. Use your new pieces to mix and match. Then the week will be a breeze, stylish outfits already picked out and ready for you to feel nothing less than amazing!
These top tips will make your shopping and style life so much easier. Try it, you’ll be glad you did it!
